Identifying AC Issues Before This Summer

The warm spring weather has finally come, which means it is time to check in on home air conditioning units. Sure, this may not be the most eventful activity of all, but ensuring a properly functioning AC will save homeowners plenty of headaches and sweating when summer arrives!

Homeowners should be on the lookout for malfunctioning AC units, particularly if they have not used their air conditioning systems in a while. If homeowners identify any of these signs, they should seek immediate professional help. After all, nobody wants to come into a hot, stuffy home after spending time out in the sun!

Hot Air and Insufficient Airflowhot at home

Hot air may signal an issue with the AC compressor, as this unit facilitates heat exchange and adds refrigerants to produce cool air. If the compressor is not functioning properly, then the air will not properly cool, thus resulting in an AC unit that blows warm air.

Insufficient airflow can potentially lead to hot air and is often a result of issues in the ductwork. When there are obstructions like particle buildup or other blockages, this can limit air circulation. In addition to obstructed ductwork, insufficient airflow can also result from issues with the AC motor or other more severe issues.

Water or Refrigerant Leaks

Leaks can often occur and may range from mild to serious in terms of their consequences on the AC systems and homeowners themselves. Water is one of the most common leakages and can often occur due to clogged drain lines. Homeowners can identify water leaks via any of the following:

  • Visible water droplets
  • Water-related damage
  • Drip pans consistently full
  • Smells of mold or fungus

While water leaks may or may not be serious, refrigerant leaks are almost always extremely serious. This is because they can significantly impact homeowners if they are not identified and taken care of early enough. Homeowners will often notice abnormal humidity, long cooling cycles, high utility bills, and ice on the AC evaporator coils. These leaks require immediate professional help.

Irregular Soundsnoises

Irregular sounds are another common sign that AC units may require repair. However, homeowners should keep in mind that AC systems can be quite noisy when functioning normally, so they should be on the lookout for irregular sounds that are out of the ordinary. Some of these include:
  • Hissing – the compressor may be to blame, or there may be a valve leak
  • Pounding, rattling, or buzzing – this could signal any variety of issues like electric issues, leaks, or loose or broken parts
  • Purring – the AC unit may have loose parts, motor issues, or compressor problems
  • Screeching – the fan or motor bearings may be to blame
  • Ticking – this may relate to the thermostat

While some of these sounds can occur with a normally operating AC system, homeowners should beware of irregularities or abnormal sounds that may signal their system needs repairs.
